Fundamentally, when children are young, parents are there managers and instruct to do this and not to do that. I've gotten over the annoyance of receiving texts every week that are along the lines of: "Did you hear a building collapsed in Brooklyn?" "There was a fire in Queens, R U OK? Call me!" and the classic "Patty, there R rabies in Central Park. Where R U?" Now it just gives me a chuckle. To my mom, New York is simply a place where it snows and dogs poop on the sidewalk. Those two facts alone make her dread coming up here for my graduation. Great post! My daughter and third child is studying abroad and I do find myself heading into that smoky place quite often. I now find myself trying to take the advice that I give my own mother who's often unfounded worrying can drive me over the brink... "It is out of our control!"
